Annoying "Read-Only" problem is back after KB969604 patch
I used to suffer from an annoying problem where every so often a doc that I'd
been editing would become read-only. I'd have to save it with a new name, delete the old copy, and rename the newly saved one. It would hum along OK for a while (sometimes a few days and sometimes just a few saves) and then become read-only again. I never found a definitive answer, but most of the threads I found in various forums suggested turning off background saves. Since turning off background saving a few months ago, I don't think this has happened more than once or twice. Today it's back with a vengance. It's happened on various docs and just about every time I save my edits. The only change to my system is last night's auto-update with security fixes (KB969604). Has anyone else seen this? Think it's a bug in the security patch? The other Office patches that were installed are 969679, 969613, and 969559. (There were many more, but they were specific to other Office products.) |

Annoying "Read-Only" problem is back after KB969604 patch
I forgot to mention that this is with Word 2007.
Has anyone else had any trouble with Word 2007 docs becoming read-only? All of the read-only threads I see on this forum are from users trying to edit a doc from a CD. |

Annoying "Read-Only" problem is back after KB969604 patch
KB969604 has a serious issue in that it can corrupt Word Documents. Reports
of issues with this update are coming from all over the place. I suggest you report this to Microsoft Support (if you have a spare few hours) and uninstall this update ASAP. Annoying "Read-Only" problem is back after KB969604 patch
Hi Chris,
Can you cite some sources for this issue? Not that I don't trust you, but we just met and I'm kind of leery about uninstalling security patches without solid justification. Thanks, Dave "Chris" wrote: KB969604 has a serious issue in that it can corrupt Word Documents. Reports of issues with this update are coming from all over the place. I also have the same problem, but i am not sure of KB969604 patch.
I am just installing SP2 to check if it resolves the issue "Dave E" wrote: I used to suffer from an annoying problem where every so often a doc that I'd been editing would become read-only. Annoying "Read-Only" problem is back after KB969604 patch
Did anyone find a fix for this? I'm still getting it with Office 2007 on XP
SP3. Happens seemingly randomly but I'm assuming that at the point I do the Save, some other process (Background Save? Virus checker?) has hold of the file and make it appear Read Only. I've never actually noticed the title having the Read Only appended to it other than when I hit the Save button, so I don't know if it occurs when before that or not. Pretty annoying. Rob |
