Default Heading number to be included in table caption - troubleshoot

Hi everyone,

I have a problem with table captions which should include a label, the Heading 1 chapter number and a running number, e.g.

Chapter 1: Some Text...
Table 1.1: xyz
Table 1.2: abc

I have tried everything to make it work but I keep getting an error message that 'there is no chapter number to include in the caption'. Firstly, I tried defining the chapter number as the element following 'Chapter', which didn't work. Next, I typed 'Chapter 1' and included an invisible heading number, to no avail! It only works if I use standard heading numbering:

1. Some Text...

Why is this so counterintuitive? Easily one of the worst MS Word features. Can anyone help please?

Set up heading numbering as discussed in the article at
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...g20072010.html. Currently
the site is having issues so you may have to look at the archived version
found at
http://web.archive.org/web/201305101...g20072010.html
(if clicking the link doesn't work, copy and paste it into your browser's
address field).

Once you have the heading numbering of your choice, click Numbering in the
Caption dialog box, select "Include chapter number" and select the Heading
style that you want. (Usually, it's best to set up numbering so that you
should use Heading 1.)

To display the Caption dialog box, click Insert | Reference | Caption (Word
2003) or References tab | Insert Caption (Word 2007-2013).

Hi Stefan,
thanks for your response. Defining list styles helped a lot but did not eliminate all problems I was having. In particular, I can't seem to enforce the following formatting for Heading 1:

CHAPTER #Number: HEADING TEXT

There appears to be some conflict between the numbering of the list style and the numbering of the heading style, which I cannot resolve. Occasionally, CHAPTER is being displayed but dissapears the moment I do something else in the document. Is there a way to reset all heading styles as I suspect the problem might relate to those?

Which formatting are you referring to? Uppercase? Modifying the Heading 1
style as "All caps" should do what you want. If it doesn't, and you are
using Word 2007 or later (which I see that I assumed in my previous reply),
you can click the list symbol itself; Word select all numbers at the same
level, and you can then apply the desired font formatting to them in the
Font dialog box (Ctrl+D).
