Can anyone tell me if the Word in MS Works 7, 8 or Suite 2004 or 2005 is the
same as standalone MS Word. I read some reviews which said you can only save
in RTF format, cannot import .DOC documents and cannot share documents with
regular Word users. I'm trying to find an affordable way to get Word for my
wife who is entering the computer age after using a typewriter for 30 years.
We can't afford to buy Microsoft Office.

I'm certain that others more familiar with Works will correct me if I'm off
the mark, but the bottom line appears to be that if you you buy Works Suite
2004, 5 or 6 you are getting a full copy of Word 2002, whereas Works 7, 8
have a 'built-in' word processor module that is _somewhat less_ full-featured
but still based on (compatible with) Word 2002. So if *total* compatibility
is a concern, the former is well worth the extra $50.

You may also want to take a look at Open Office, which is quite popular,
reportedly quite compatible, and quite FREE. Find out more he

Yes - it's the same Word version. It is the Works word processor that can
only save in RTF format. You get that in the *suite* also. Note Works is
also sold without Word. The Works *suite* is currently the cheapest way to
buy Word.

An even cheaper possibility is to buy remaindered stock of Office 2000. You
can get a legal copy from eBay for peanuts if you shop carefully.

I don't know what "Word" you are referring to in MS Works7, 8 or Suite 2004
or 2005 because there is no "Word" in any MS Works suite. MS Works names
there applications in the suite "Works Word processor, Works Spreadsheet,
Works Calendar," so no there is no "Word" in MS Works. It is also not the
same as MS Word because MS Word is a much bigger and more features than the
MS Works word processor. Also, MS Word is not a stand alone program (at least
not that I've ever heard). MS Word is part of the MS Office suite. You're
right the MS Works word processor wont' save files in the .doc format, but it
will save them in older versions of MS Word and then MS Word can open many
different file types including older versions of MS Word documents. MS Word
also opens up .RTF documents easily.

software, but have you tried places online like Ebay. I bought a genuine copy
for around $30.
If you comfortable or don't want to look on Ebay for the MS Office suite
there is another alternative office suite which is very compatible with MS

Not correct!

The Works *suites* include Word and this is one of the cheapest ways of
buying Word. This is the same as the version of Word included in Office, but
a version behind the current version, so it will feature Word 2002 rather
than 2003.

MS Works does not include a copy of MS Word, but MS Works Suite does include MS Word. It used to be the current version of Word,
and it was an economical way to acquire Word (i.e. MS Works Suite was often lower priced than MS Word standalone).

The present MS Works Suite products include one version back of MS Word. So MS Works Suite 2006 (v8) includes MS Word 2002 and MS
Works 2007 (v9) will likely have MS Word 2003 rather than Word 2007.

MS Works vs MS Works Suite? Thats not the comparison I was trying to make. I
was trying to make a comparison between MS Works or the Suite (which I
thought were the same) and MS Office 2000 ( the more expensive office suite).
I was under the impression that mscertified was asking about the difference
between the MS Works word processor and the MS Word program in MS Office
2000. The reason I was under that impression is because at the end of his
comment he says that he and his wife can't afford to buy MS Office.

There is no version of Word in any product called just "Works"; what you get
with that is the Works word processor. Works Suite (of which there appears
to be no current version) contains Word 2002, and it is a full and complete
version of Word 2002, which is two versions old but still useful.

I would still recommend the suite if you can find it, since you get a lot of
other useful apps with it. OTOH, the Home and Student Edition of Office 2007
may cost about the same (under $100) and would include other Office apps,
which might or might not be more useful, and your wife *might* find Word
2007 more user-friendly than Word 2002.
