Default not responding when using the open command from the file menu

When I do open from the file menu, and click the drop down menu in the look
up window the program freezes. I do ctrl alt delete and it says not
responding. I have to close it and reopen word again. If I open the file
from explorer with a double click it works. What is wrong can anyone help us
out. This happens on more than one computer.
