A friend of mine is using Microsoft Word. The toolbar which contains the
page you are on, rec, trk, ext, and ovr has every word on it grayed out. He
cannot toggle rec, trk, ext, or ovr on the toolbar. I was just wondering why
this area may be grayed out.

He could be in web layout view instead of print layout or normal view.

Possibly the document is protected in some way. If the Tools menu contains
the item Unprotect Document (instead of Protect Document), then this is the
problem.
