Default Shift+F5 doesn't work in Word 2007

Is anyone else having a problem with this key combination? It just isn't
working anymore. I used it regularly in prev. versions of Word. The Word 2007
Help does list this as a valid key comb. to go to last edit.

Other Shift+function keys work, such as Shift+F3 (change case), and I
noticed in testing that Shift+F5 works if file hasn't been saved/closed; I
could swear I used to save a file and close it, the use Shift+F5 when I
opened it to go to last edit location.

Anyone else?

Thanks, Jay. I will have to check into that solution (macro) in detail
later. I'm not sure I want to add that macro to my templates (added
complexity).

That article (by Andria Pinson and Dave Rado) says "some files you open
won't €śgo back€ť when you press Shift+F5." I never had any problems in Word
2003. It always worked when I opened a file I had prev. been working on. So
I'm curious as to why it works for "some files" and not for others -- and now
not in Word 2007. (Or will it work for some files and not others in 2007,
too?)

Anyway, thx for the workaround.

My reply was based on matching your problem statement with my knowledge that
there was a workaround for Word 2000 through 2003. Unfortunately, Word 2007
is a different story.

Over the weekend I investigated further and found that, even with the macro,
Word 2007 doesn't go back with Shift+F5 after closing and reopening a
document. It isn't ever going to work unless MS adds a fix to a service
pack.

As the article explains, GoBack operates by jumping to a built-in bookmark
named \PrevSel1. Versions of Word through 2003 saved that bookmark in the
document file, so it's still defined when you reopen the document. The macro
worked around a problem in which the bookmark wasn't saved if the document
was the last one open.

I've found that Word 2007 doesn't save the bookmark at all, no matter how
many documents are open. That means the macro has no effect -- GoBack simply
never works to remember the last edit position through a close/reopen cycle.

This could probably be solved with additional macros that save the location
as a different bookmark on closing and restore \PrevSel1 from that
information on opening. As you say, though, this is additional complexity;
also, writing a macro that works reliably when the user closes the document
(by any of four or five different methods) is quite difficult.

I'm going to ask Microsoft to log this issue as a bug. You can help by
submitting your request as a "suggestion to Microsoft".

Update in early Dec.: I tried this key combination again, and it is now
working. I don't know if an update was pushed or what, but I'm glad that
Shift+F5 is now working in Word 2007! (My vers. now says Word 2007
(12.0.6015.5000) MSO (12.0.6017.5000). This is an Enterprise vers. of Office.

Default Shift+F5 doesn't work in Word 2007

Hello GMc of Phoenix and others

Losing the ability to use Shift & F5 to move to the last change in a saved
Word 2007 document is very annoying. & frustrating. I just tried it again &
it is not working. Our organisation is using Visa running Office 2007,
Business version. Does anybody know if an update is available for this
version? I am not very technical; our organisation has an IT department that
may be able to supply further specs if I ask them nicely. It is a relief to
know others are missing Shift & F5. Thanks.

David,
Sorry for the tardy reply. I don't know what to say, my Shift+F5 is now
working. I am on Windows XP, though, so perhaps this has something to do with
Vista? Did you check to make sure you have the latest SP?

Another thing I notice is that this function still does not seem to work in
a .docx file, while it works consistently in a .doc file.

You say you aren't very technical, so the following MVP article may be a bit
intimidating, but it describes a macro that can be added to your Normal.dot
file: http://word.mvps.org/faqs/apperrors/gobackfix.htm. The article is
nearly a year old, so you might want to contact the group at
about this subject again.

Good luck,
--GMc
