Navigate to Office (round button on top left), Word Options, Proofing.
Assure that Check spelling as you type is checked.

I have the same issue. "Check spelling as you type" is selected but Word is
not checking my spelling. Also, if I go to Review and click Spell Check, it
doesn't recognize any misspelled words.

Navigate to Set Language on the Review tab. Make sure that Do not check
spelling or grammar is
_not_ checked and that you have selected a language as default for which
your version of Office has a spell checker dictionary included. Alternately,
acquire and install the appropriate dictionary.

I have the same issue. I have checked all of the items in this thread and
they were already set correctly, but I cannot get spell checking to work.
The only thing I do not know how to check is if the dictionary is there. The
default language is English. Any other ideas on what could cause spell
checking not to work in any documents.

Is there anyway to get a step by step on that process. I am not savy enough
to execute the procedure, although I have tried.

Essentially the page boils down to the line

Delete the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\1.0\Override" registry key.

Run regedit from Windows start run Locate the key in the Explorer like
window and delete it.

Thank you very much, it worked like a charm. I was not familiar with the

I have tried it. but i just dont have that Override key.

It actually works fine if i set the language other than English, but i have
english version of XP and Office, and have set the default language to
English.

If I change the default language to English, the spelling checker will not
work.
Thank you.

Actually, no I'm not - I'm on Word 2003. I realized after I posted that this
may be a thread for Word 2007. Sorry for the confusion. I still can't figure
out how to enable spell check in templates though (without writing a macro).

It's easy to miss the version information in a subject line (I do that all
the time), so you're forgiven. In Word 2003, with the template open, Ctrl+A
to Select All and go to Tools | Language | Set Language, make sure you have
the right language selected, and clear all the check boxes.

Note, however, that language is (for want of a better description) a font
property that can ride in on pasted text (as little as a single character),
so it's easy for documents to become "infected" with the wrong language or
text that's marked as "Do not check spelling or grammar."
