I am drafting a procedures manual in Word which I am hyperlinking templates
to. When I select the hyperlink, it opens the template (.dot) rather than a
Word document of the template. I am not doing this through a web browser -
it's just a standalone manual with multiple attached templates.

I believe that the usual solution to this problem is to create Windows
shortcuts to the templates (*.lnk files) and have the hyperlink in Word point
to those shortcuts instead of pointing to the templates themslevs. For
example, if I create a shortcut from a template, and then change its target to

"/tC:\Word_StartUp\My Template.dot"

A document based on "My Template.dot" is created. But, because this is done
from a hyperlink, you get all kinds of paranoid messages from Word and
Windows.

If you do not want those messages, you need a macro button (which can be
formatted to look like a hyperkink) which would call a macro to create a

Actually, I've been reading the answers to this question, and I tried what
people suggest and what Microsoft suggests, but for the life of me I can't
make it work. Would someone please explain this procedure step by step? I
went over and over it about 50 times, creating and recreating shortcuts, and
following the directions exactly, but obviously missing something. After i
insert the hyperlink, and click on it, it still gives me "cannot find the
specified file" or something to that extent. My main concern is the LNK file.
What is it? Creating shortcut to a template leave the .dot extension. Do I
have to rename it or what? I know it shouldn't be that hard, but I need some
help with that. Thank you.

Step 1

Select the "Object" option from under the Word 'Insert' toolbar item

Step 2

Select the "Create from file" tab from the Object dialog

Step 3

Select [Browse]

Step 4

Locate and double click on the document you want to imbed

Step 5

You can choose to imbed an icon to clearly indicate that this may be
selected - to do so select the 'Display as icon' checkbox

Step 6

Select [OK]

Step 7

Check the object opens successfully from within your document
