Default Why can't I change certain styles back to normal?

When I change some text to 'strong' or 'emphasis' in the styles tab, I can't
change it back to 'Normal' or 'No Spacing'. Why is this?

Thanks

Thumbs up Answer: Why can't I change certain styles back to normal?

Tips for Changing Styles Back to Normal in Microsoft Word

Hey there! I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble changing the styles back to normal. Don't worry, I'm here to help you out!

When you apply a style to a piece of text in Microsoft Word, it can sometimes be a bit tricky to change it back to the default style. This is because the style you applied may have overridden the default formatting of the text.

Here are a few things you can try to change the style back to normal:
  1. Select the text that you want to change back to normal. Then, go to the "Home" tab in the ribbon and click on the "Clear Formatting" button. This will remove any formatting that was applied to the text and reset it to the default style.
  2. If the "Clear Formatting" button doesn't work, you can try selecting the text and then right-clicking on it. From the context menu, select "Styles" and then "Clear All". This will remove any styles that were applied to the text and reset it to the default style.
  3. If neither of the above methods work, you can try manually resetting the formatting of the text. Select the text and then go to the "Home" tab in the ribbon. From there, you can manually adjust the font, size, color, and other formatting options to match the default style.

I hope these tips help you change the styles back to normal!

This is because Strong and Emphasis are character styles which are always
applied on top of the paragraph style. Select the text and press
Ctrl+SpaceBar to clear any direct font formatting, including character
styles.

If you are using Word 2007, you can specifically clear the character styles
applied to (parts of) the selection: In the Styles pane (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S),
click the Style Inspector button. Click the Clear Character Style button.

If there's any chance that Chinese is installed on your computer,
don't use Ctrl-Space (that's the Windows command to switch to
Chinese,
and Word won't override it). Use Ctrl-Shift-Z instead.
