Default How to remove unwanted background coloring from line numbering

There is a Line Number character style that could conceivably include text
shading.

I have applied line numbering from File menu, page setup, Layout, Line
numbering. On my computer the line numbering appears with a dark blue
background behind each line number. The color prints. On another computer
the
same document appears correctly without the blue background on the
numbers.
It also prints correctly. I can find nothing about formatting the line
numbers. This is Word 2003.
