Default In typing dates in Word, i.e. "January 12" how do you keep the "1.

In Word, if I typing the date, i.e., "January 12," how can I keep the "12"
from going to the next line? In Word Perfect it's control + space. When I
first learned typing years ago, I was taught to NEVER separate the Month from
the date. Please help!
