My number keypad WAS working correctly. I evidently entered some code (other
than "Num Lock") which switched it to the secondary usage. How do I go back
to being able to type numbers via the keypad?

That would depend on what kind of keyboard you're using. This strikes me as
a hardware issue, and not really a word document management issue.
