Default Connecting footnote text style to footnote reference style

If you are working in a document that has more than one footnote style
attached to it, the Footnote Reference style picks one of these as a default
to use for the text of the accompanying footnote. If you want to use a
different footnote text style as the default (one that is already attached to
the document), how do you change the default? There does not seem to be any
provision in the style modification window to indicate which of the footnote
text styles in that document the Footnote Reference style should use. I don't
want to have to delete the other footnote text styles from the document, I
just want to tell the Footnote Reference style which footnote text style it
should pick. Any ideas?

By default, Footnote Reference style is a character style defined as Default
Paragraph Font + Superscript. This means that it should be the same font
style and size as the underlying text (in the document or in the text), with
Superscript formatting applied. Since there cannot be more than one Footnote
Text style, I can only assume that some of your footnotes have direct
formatting applied.

Am I to understand that there can only be one footnote text style attached to
a document? What happens if text from another document that has a different
footnote style attached to it is pasted into the master document, bringing
with it a second footnote text style? (And if sections are pasted in from
multiple documents, several different footnote text styles can end up in the
master document.)

All footnotes in a given document should be formatted the same. If you
*must* make them different, you'll have to use direct formatting or apply a
different style (but the footnote will use Footnote Text style by default;
you'll have to change it manually). A second document pasted in will not
bring its own Footnote Text style. The footnotes (unless they have had
direct formatting applied in the original document) will take on the
Footnote Text style defined in the target document. See
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/styl...xtChanges.html

I trust you are not using "master document" in the sense of Master Document
(see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/General/Wh...csCorrupt.htm).
