Default Add numbers to headings in word 2007

Hi I have the following problem with Word 2007.
I am unable to set up a numbering to my headings to be like
1. Heading
1.1 Subheading
......
I was able to set up numbering only to headings, but those numbers are not
inherited by subheadings included in those chapters. I know how to do it in
word 2003, but unfortunately I am unable to find it in word 2007.

You need to make the headings part of an outline numbering scheme; in Word
2007 I believe this is called a multi-level list.

Adam, when you get ready to set up your Subheading level numbers:
(1) Set the number of the Subheading paragraph by selecting from the "Number
style for this level" window.
(2) Then move your cursor to the left of the number you selected that's now
displayed in the "Enter formatting for number:" window.
(3) Click the box next to "Legal Style Numbering." The "Include level number
from" window will light up. Choose the Heading level (e.g., Level 1, or
whatever) that you want to precede the Subheading level number. Your
paragraph number in the "Enter formatting for number:" window will now
display "1.1" (or whatever you selected).
(4) Now link the Subheading level to a style, make sure the Subheading
levels restart after the Heading levels, and you're all set.
