Removing and Item from the "Recently Opened" list
I am curious if there is a way to remove an item from the "Recently Opened"
list? I guse I could always go open five other documents in succession for the "sensitive" item to be pushed of the list. But, I figured someone here would be able to provide another more direct way to handle this. ~ Thanks |

You can use the ALT+CTRL+-, this will give you a dark black fat horizontal line, go to the file menu, click on the docname you want to remove. Be very careful not to click on any of the menu items or they will be gone too. the mouse pointer into a large black line? This is the "remove the next thing I click" command. If you click it on a menu item, it will be removed from the menu. If you click it on a toolbar tool, that tool will be zapped. And, if you click it on a file in the MRU files list (at the bottom of the File menu), that file will be removed from the MRU list. Actually, in Word 2003, removing a file from the MRU list at the bottom of
the File menu does also remove it from the Getting Started task pane. -- Suzanne S. It's not available in Word 2007. The features (menus and toolbars) with
which it was designed to work don't exist in Word 2007. Are you saying that the list under Open in the Getting Started task pane is
different from the one at the bottom of your File menu? Mine are exactly the same except that the task pane shows only the filename, not part of the path. -- Suzanne S. Yes. They're different. I never noticed whether they were the same before
(frankly, I never actually use the Getting Started feature, but refer others to it from time to time when it's the easiest way to explain something). Just now, for example... there were 9 documents listed in the File MRU list, and 9 listed in the Getting started panel. They're mostly the same, but not entirely. In any case, the 9th document in each was the same. I just removed the 9th document from the File MRU, and while it's gone from there, it's still listed in the 9th slot in the Open list in the Getting Started pane... 8 clicks later. I've completely depopulated the File MRU, and the Open list still shows the original 9 documents. I've tried toggling the pane on/off, but those 9 documents continue to be there (and some of them weren't on the File MRU list to begin with). Also... If you turn off the feature using Tools - Options - General (or set the
number of files down to a lower number), does that affect the list of files displayed in the Getting Started pane? After logging off and logging back on, the two lists are now synchronized in Word 2003. But, closing/restarting Word did not make any difference, and when I remove the files from the list using the black dash method, the Getting Started list does not change. I wonder if what I'm seeing here is because I have both Word 2003 and 2007 installed. Although... What I am looking to do is to be able to prevent Word from repopulating, or atleast controlling the repopulation of the most recently opened files, found in both the File drop down menu and from the "Getting Started" tsk menu, located to the right of the document when opening Word. Obviously, there is something that looks for the most recently opened items. I would think if it can look it can also "not look", or "selectively look". Any thoughts? |

Removing and Item from the "Recently Opened" list
No, changing the number of entries or turning the feature off completely
doesn't seem to affect the Getting Started task pane (and now you've got me wondering about removing a file, too, though I would have been willing to swear it worked). -- Suzanne S. I never noticed whether they were the same before (frankly, I never actually use the Getting Started feature, but refer others to it from time to time when it's the easiest way to explain something). Just now, for example... there were 9 documents listed in the File MRU list, and 9 listed in the Getting started panel. They're mostly the same, but not entirely. In any case, the 9th document in each was the same. I just removed the 9th document from the File MRU, and while it's gone from there, it's still listed in the 9th slot in the Open list in the Getting Started pane... 8 clicks later. I've completely depopulated the File MRU, and the Open list still shows the original 9 documents. I've tried toggling the pane on/off, but those 9 documents continue to be there (and some of them weren't on the File MRU list to begin with). Also...
