Default When I try to use the pound symbol I get a hash symbol,

It seems only this key is giving a symbol not on the key. What have I done
and how can I revert?

Correct your locale on the control panel. Most of the world expects Shift-3
to produce hash -- not many countries use pounds or pound symbols.

And in fact, we use # for pound(s) of weight and the "pound key" on the
telephone keypad.
