opened-documents list: how to get to; how to read easily
The "opened-documents list" is at e.g.: Microsoft Office Word 2003:
Tools: Window: More Windows. To restate or summarize a prior thread of helpful postings: Maybe you can't increase the length of the opened-documents list, but you can make it a tiny bit easier to get to such list, by assigning a "macro" or key-combination shortcut to access the list quickly (which by the way changes the normal.dot template). A way to create such key-combination shortcut is: Tools: Customize: Keyboard: Category=All Command=WindowList PressNewShortcutKey: Ctrl+Shift+W might be a sample good choice But there is a remaining problem: now that you can get quickly to such opened-documents list (which is entitled "Activate"), the list is in a tiny box -- 3 inches by 3 inches, thus precluding seeing all one's documents in one glance, and precluding seeing the full name of any document that has a long name. DOES ANYONE HAVE A SUGGESTION TO ALLEVIATE THIS PROBLEM? Thanks. (I'm using Windows XP Professional.) I'm confused about where you're seeing this list. I don't have a Window
command on the Tools menu in Word 2003, nor is such a command listed in the Tools category in the Customize dialog. Are you perhaps referring to the Window menu on the Menu Bar? -- Suzanne S. I don't see any Window commands in the Tools category of the Customize
Keyboard dialog, either. I'm asking you where you are seeing this menu option you describe as "Tools: Window: More Windows." There are no Window commands on the Tools menu and no "More Windows" command on my Window menu, though I'm willing to accept that if I had more than, say, nine documents open at once, there might be. -- Suzanne S. The 'Tools' bit is a red herring. Your assumption about 'More Windows' only appearing on the Window Menu if you have more than nine windows (not documents) open is correct. 104, AFAIK there is no way to resize the dialog box. It is one of many that are like this. I accept it's rather poor design / implementation but is it really such a big problem in your normal use of Word? -- Enjoy, Tony "Suzanne S. You're still not getting it, are you? If I open more than nine documents, I
have the More Windows... command on my *Window* menu, but there is still no such command on the *Tools* menu. If it is there, it is because you yourself have added it. -- Suzanne S. I'm sorry but you can't do anything about it.
I can't imagine what you're working with that this is such a big problem but maybe you can do it another way. If you set Windows in Taskbar (Tools Options) then each window will have its own Windows taskbar entry. If you have icon grouping switched on (I forget how right now but I think its the default) then you should have one taskbar icon which will give you a popup of all the Word windows from which you can select the one you want. -- Enjoy, Tony "104" wrote in message oups.com... Yes, there is that workaround to try to see fully an ordered list of all the open Word documents with long names -- I do have in the Windows Taskbar a pop-up of all the open Word documents. The problem there is that such pop-up and its list of documents: - is narrower than is the document list at: {Microsoft Word: Window} - seems to be ordered by chronology (i.e. by which Word document you opened first). In contrast: {Microsoft Word: Window: the open-document list} orders the documents alphanumerically.) |
