Default Document automatically applies all changes to whole document

When I select a block of text in a Word document, then make a change (bold,
italics, etc.) the *entire document* changes. Then if I hit the "Back"
button, the selected text stays changed and the rest of the text reverts.

I'm using XP Home, Word 2003 part of Office Pro 2003.

Thanks in advance!
