Themes and Style Sets in Word 2007
I am beginning to accept the stark reality that MS feels that its
hundreds of millions of everyday user have no business tailoring the UI one of its products to suit thier personal taste unless they are willing to become a software developer. That is disappointing, but apparently the reality. Regarding the subject themes and style sets. Does anyone know if these are possibly contained in the registry or some other application file that can be edited or detleted? I see that I can create my own style set and even make it the default. However, I will never use one of the predefined themes or style sets and I would like to delete all of them. Thanks. |

assuming you used the default installation location:
themes are in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Document Themes 12" the .thmx and .eftx files are zip archives with xml in them, so happy editing. styles are in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\1033\QuickStyles" (zipped xml, again - all of the new office formats are built that way.) note: "1033" assumes a "English (U.S.)" installation. Kip,
Thanks. I don't want to edit the silly things I want to delete them ;-) If I delete the themes, Word installer just puts them back when I next start Word :-( (There is foul sailor language to go with that). Fortunately I can delete or rename the style sets. Thanks for the information. -- Greg Maxey/Word MVP See: http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/word_tips.htm For some helpful tips using Word. you asked if they could be "edited or detleted".
you can delete most of the themes, but if you delete them all they will be re-installed. I haven't found the "Office" theme yet, it may be built into the word executable. so it looks like you'll have to leave at least that one, and one of those in "Document Themes 12". Sorry I forgot to post back to you. You can uninstall QuickFormatting Sytles which does remove *all* the themes and *all* style sets. It may effect more stuff as well but I haven't thoroughly investigated. Once again Word2007 is more like a East Bloc automobile from a few decades back.
