I want the selection unformatted to be the highlighted selection when i go
into Paste Special. Is there somewhere I can specify this?

Use a macro such as the following:

Sub PasteAsPlainText()
On Error Resume Next
Selection.PasteSpecial DataType:=wdPasteText
End Sub
