Default Word 2003 Formating.

Greetings:

I have a 300 page book that has a lot of different headings and inconsistent
formatting. I want to:

1. Simplify it to only 3 heading level, one font, and a few basic font type
face, and only three types of bullets.

2. At the same time I MUST KEEP THE COMPLEX INDEX that had been created over
time.

Is there an easy way to do this.

Assigning new paragraph styles to the paragraphs in the document won't
affect the index markers.

As Peter says, changing heading styles (or any styles) won't affect your
index, which is based on XE fields (they're formatted as Hidden text, so it
would be a good idea to have that displayed so you don't inadvertently
delete any of them). If by "index," however, you mean a table of contents
(TOC), then this is a different issue. By default, a TOC is based on heading
styles, so applying heading styles sensibly would allow you to create a
sensible TOC.
