Default why my backspace button is not deleting the highligted text?

I will go crazy if I cannot find the answer of this question. I am
highlightening a text and pressing backspace, but IT IS NOT DELETING!!!
Moreover, when I highlight a word or text and press a letter to write a new
word indtead of the highlighted one, it is not deleting it, but placing it
near the highlighted word. Please help me. Thank you

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
