Default Tables slide over text (HELP time critical)

I have a Word document with tables in it. My problem is that the tables
won't keep the position I put them in relative to the text. I wish I could
send a picture in this forum. I cut and paste my table to the place I want
it (e.g., between two paragraphs), but when I open the document again, it's
literally sitting on top of text. If I drag it up or down or left or right,
I can see the text underneath appear. It's as if I have two "planes" in my
document, one for text and one for tables. Here's a picture of what a
portiion of my document might look like after I open it. (Having closed it
looking reasonable.)

THE DOCUMENT WHEN I CLOSE IT

whatever fence. Sorry I don't remember
my typing lesson.

Hoping someone can help. The paper is already late because of this and the
extension is only til midnight.

Try clicking on the table and then using Tables - Table Properties to check
the wrapping settings for the table, it might work if you set the wrapping
to 'None', if not, try setting the wrapping to 'around' and then back to
'none' again to see if it sorts it out.

The problem is that if you drag a table by its handle (in Print Layout
view), it becomes wrapped; there is no way to avoid this. There are two ways
to solve the problem:

1. After dragging the table, go to Table Properties and set the wrapping
back to None; or

2. Instead of dragging the table by its handle, select the entire table in
the usual way (this is easier in Normal view, where you don't risk grabbing
the handle) and drag.

Thanks.
It turns out it was a different setting on that same tabpage. Click
"Positioning". At the bottom of the next page are two check boxes, "Move
with text" and "Allow overlap." Mine had the first unchecked and the second
checked. It needed to be the reverse. I have no idea how those got set
that way, as I didn't know about all these settings.
