Default Word captions - unable to edit

I am using inline with text images in a Word XP template that uses numbered
heading styles. When I insert a caption the dialog box opens but the label
and number are not displayed nor can I enter any text in the dialog box to
describe the figure. My normal.dot template works fine. Any ideas

Have you modified the Caption paragraph style to be centered or
right-aligned?

No I didn't modify the style. However I think I have now fixed it by using
the Organiser from Tools, Templates & Add ins, to copy the Caption style into
my template. I then had to update all the documents associated with that
template. Very tedious but it seemed to work. Perhaps there is a quicker way?
