Default Numbered list- want to color just one word with color, not number

Using Word 2003. I have number lists with a word like:
1. bread
2. butter
3. meat
4. candy
When I color the word, the number is colored along with this. I can select
undo and correct it but that is a pain.
Is there some setting that will allow me to just pick the word, change its
color, and not have the preceding number pick up the color?
Thanks for any assistance with this item!

Hi,

I had the same issue once. I think you just have to be very careful of
highlighting the text with your mouse because if you go over (for instance)
the first letter word will think that you are selecting the whole row. The
best thing to do is to either:

Write a sentence, put that word in the middle, color it and then delete all
the othr words around it.

Click on the last letter and make sure that the scroll is highlighting the
space after that letter. Then hold the "shift" key and scroll with the arrows
(to the left) until the whole word is highlighted and then colour it.

Let me know how it goes,

Hi,

When you select and change the formatting of all the text in an item in a
numbered list, the new formatting will also be applied to the number.
However, if you select and change the formatting of only part of the text in
an item in a numbered list, the new formatting will not be applied to the
number. Thus, you can achieve your goal if you would select all the text
except, for example, the last character, apply the new formatting, and then
select only the last character and apply the new formatting to it.

Hope this helps,

First, click on the ¶ button on your toolbar to show the non-printing
characters.
Then select only the word itself and NOT the ¶ character at the end of the
line. It often helps if there's a space after the word, but it isn't
necessary.
Then change the font color.

If Word is stubborn and insists on coloring the number anyway, select the ¶
character at the end of the line and turn it back to black. Then tell your
computer to behave itself, and you can get back to work.

I appreciate the various responses.
Is there any way to prevent the selection of the last return in the line?
This seems to be the problem.
Thanks again!

Unfortunately, no. This is Word being "helpful." No matter how carefully you
omit the paragraph mark in your selection, it will be included anyway--at
least if more than half of the paragraph is selected, or if the last word is
selected.

Just by luck, I discovered that if I use the Alt key, then I can highlight
the word without selecting the paragraph symbol.
Thanks!

Wouldn't deselecting "Use smart paragraph selection" work, or am I missing

3. meat
4. candy
When I color the word, the number is colored along with this. I
can
select
undo and correct it but that is a pain.
Is there some setting that will allow me to just pick the word,
change
its
color, and not have the preceding number pick up the color?
Thanks for any assistance with this item!

Default Numbered list- want to color just one word with color, not num

Wouldn't deselecting "Use smart paragraph selection" work, or am I missing
something here?

Just by luck, I discovered that if I use the Alt key, then I can
highlight
the word without selecting the paragraph symbol.
Thanks!

I appreciate the various responses.
Is there any way to prevent the selection of the last return in the
line?
This seems to be the problem.
Thanks again!

First, click on the ¶ button on your toolbar to show the

Then select only the word itself and NOT the ¶ character at the end

isn't
necessary.
Then change the font color.

If Word is stubborn and insists on coloring the number anyway,
select the

character at the end of the line and turn it back to black. Then
tell
your
computer to behave itself, and you can get back to work.

You can also hit Shift-left arrow to deslect one character (in this case the
end of paragraph symbol) at a time.
