Default Spacing jumps approx 8 lines even though spacing is set on "single

I'm using Windows XP Pro for Gateway 2000 Computer, Word 2000. When I hit
enter the cursor will drop down one line and then immediately drop about 8
more lines. I have the spacing set on "single". Does anyone know how to
stop this from happening?

On the Layout tab of Page Setup, make sure that vertical alignment is set to
Top and not Justified.
