Default when i open word, a previous document appears, not a blank one!!!

hi,
I've just acquired a computer from a family member, but every time i start
up 'word' i'm faced with an old un-titled document, rather than a new blank
document. i've deleted the document - still comes up. i've deleted the text
on the document, and created a new doc over the top - still, next time i open
'word', the same doc comes up - very annoying! help anyone?
Brian.
