Default Header/Footer Insert Autotext option grayed out

In my normal.dot, the Header/Footer Insert Autotext option is grayed out.
Also in quite a few, if not most, of my existing documents, it turns out.

Any thoughts on how to get it back?
Thank you

This is usually a symptom that Normal.dot has been overwritten with a
document. See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...ocNotBlank.htm

It is simply an indication that there are no autotexts defined in the header
footer paragraph styles - often a result of saving a document as normal.dot.
Rename normal.dot to oldnormal.dot to revert to defaults.
