Default Word 07 trashes large files - repeatable bug

Upgraded from Office pro 03 (power user) to Office Ent 07 on stand alone
laptop with XP...

Word 07 trashes long documents, and it is replicatable every time.

From explorer, double click to Open 03 document (45 pages, with automated
TOC, Index and index fields to mark index entries)
Attach a custom Style Set (Home, Change Style Set); This style set
represents the styles used by the 03 template that the document was created
on.
The document looks fine.
Save AS to different folder, uncheck compatibility with 03
Disaster...
reopen you document - is is truncated to 6 pages, TOC and all styles are
totally trashed making it useless.

or

From Word O7, open same docuemnt 03 document
Convert to 07 (actually, it doesn't matter if you convert or save in
compatibility mode, it is still trashed).
Everything looks fine
Save as to different folder
same Disaster as above when you reopen it

After spending a day, here is the only way to do it:
Open 03 file
Delete TOC, Index, and remove all Index Fields that mark index entires
Attach a custom style set (I don't think this matters)
convert to 07 (I don't think this matters)
Save AS to different file.
Open File, it looks fine.
Now you have to rebuild the TOC, Index.

Buidling an Index via a concondance file seems to have dissappeared from
Word 07, I will post that seperately.

This is incredibly dangerous. I think what is trashing the file is the
index entries when you convert to 07.

Any comments? Why does MS put out software like this?

Eliminating the XE fields seems to "cure" the corruption.

Hey... we don't need no stinkin' index. Right?
