Default Style Names

I first learned about styles around the Word 3.0 days, was sidetracked in
WorkPerfectLand during the early Office times. In those olden times, you
pretty much made up any style names -- keep them logical and so on. Now
that Word has "built-in" style names, is it best practice to stick with the
built-in names, or otherwise?

For example. I have a news release template. Currently I have style names
such as:

NR Headline
NR Subhead
NR Text
NR Contact
etc.

Should I have used
Heading 1
Heading 2
Normal
etc.

I like the logic of recognizable names, but I'd like to know what the
experts do.

Sincerely,

Ridge

Use the built-in heading styles at least. You can give them additional
names.

I usually like to at least start with the built-in styles, especially for
headings (see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...ingStyles.html), but
I do add custom styles for purposes that don't seem to be addressed by the
built-in ones.

For headings and captions, the built-in styles do have some special magic -
see
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numb...ingStyles.html.

I would normally avoid using Normal style directly (and would modify only
its basic font characteristics), since so many other built-in styles are
"based on" it.

Otherwise, the choice is usually down to personal taste, though if you need
to share text across documents (particularly import from existing documents)
that might influence your naming scheme. You might want to look at:

I'm not sure exactly what you mean here.

Use same style definitions with different names or:

Use heading style names verbatum and then add additional names for other
styles as needed.

In the Modify | Style dialog, you can type in additional names for the
built-in Headings, so that you can have, for example "Heading 1, h1, Chapter
Title," and you can use any of those names to call up the style.

You can change the defitions of the built-in styles so they match the way
you want your headings to look. When you modify them, you can add names by
putting a comma after the name and typing another one. For instance, I add
the name h1 to Heading 1.
