Default backspace does not delete a string of text when it is highlighted

in word, when i highlight a selection of text and then press backspace, the
text is not deleted, the cursor just moves to the start of the highlighted
text. how can i solve this problem?

i have tried uninstalling, reinstalling and it didnt work.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
