Default why won't delete key delete a word in a document

I just installed Office Student and Teacher Edition 2003. I can't get the
delete key to delete selected sections. I can select and backspace twice to
delete, but the delete key just won't work. Also, when I save documents,
they save as WordPad documents instead of Word documents. In Tools, Options,
Save and have Save Word Files As: Word Document (*.doc) selected. What's
wrong? Am I mssing something?

try doing this:

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces
selection" box | OK.

Are you perhaps missing the message in the status bar asking you to confirm
that you want to make the deletion. To avoid having to do this, from the
Tools menu, select Options and then go to the General tab and uncheck the
two boxes concerning WordPerfect users.
