Default Word 2003 creating divider tabs at edge of pages?

I'd like to create solid black tabs at the right edge of a cookbook document
to demarcate the chapters. I created the original document but am trying to
replicate tabs inserted by a printer the last time the book was printed. The
tabs are 1" x 1/8" vertically and bleed off the right-hand page. There are 8
tabs. They begin 1/4" from top and bottom of the page. The cookbook is
landscape, 2 pages per sheet. The tabs appear on the odd pages only. Have
tried without success to find instructions and would appreciate any advice.
Thanks!

Try this, Karen: Create a text box using the Drawing toolbar. Type your tab
text into it. Select the border of the text box, and hit Format--Text
direction and turn the text sideways. Position. Reference:

1. Since you want these on odd pages only, the first thing you need to do is
check the box for "Different odd and even" on the Layout tab of Page Setup.

2. Open the Odd Page Header and create a one-column table with as many rows
as you need tabs. Remove any table borders but make sure you have table
gridlines or text boundaries displayed so you can see the cell boundaries.

3. Set the wrapping on the table to Around (Table tab of Table |
Properties).

4. Set the row height of each row to Exactly the tab width you want.

5. Insert a Next Page section break where you want each new section to
begin.

6. Unlink all the Odd Page Headers so that you can put different content in
each one.

7. For each section, fill the appropriate table cell with black shading. If
your text color is set to Auto, the text you type in the cell (if any) will
become white. You may want to change the text direction if the tabs are
narrow.

Note that even if you position your table right at the page edge, you will
probably not be able to print clear to the edge, since most printers have a
finite unprintable area on each side.
