CTRL+* or click the ¶ button on the formatting toolbar to toggle them off.

Default dots between words

Graham has told you how to hide them. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm for some reasons why
it's often useful to be able to see them.
