dynamic page number Word 2002 SP3
Is it possible to embed dynamic page number links throughout a document like
the table of contents? I have a document (the MS Rich Text File Specification version 1.5) where the table of contents page numbers change as needed when I adjust the document margins sufficiently to alter the page numbers where sections and/or sub-sections are located. There are locations within the document where the following phrase occurs: "see section {yada yada yada} on page {whatever number}" The "whatever" page numbers do NOT change when the margins are adjusted. Can page numbers referenced within a document be automatically adjusted as needed when the margins are adjusted if somehow a link is associated with a section or sub-section? Other than the header, footer, TOC, or Index. Please advise. Thanks, Tracey BTW I discovered a document map where sections and sub-section headings correlate with the document. I don't know if it is directly, indirectly, or un-related to the page numbering. |

What you are referring to is a PAGEREF field. You can insert this field
using Insert | Reference | Cross-reference. If the item you want to refer to is a heading, numbered item, caption, footnote, endnote, etc., it will be available automatically. If not, you will need to insert a bookmark in the location you want to cross-reference and then insert a cross-reference to the page number of that bookmark. PAGEREF fields do not update automatically but will update at print time (or on Print Preview) provided you have "Update fields" checked on the Print tab of Tools | Options. Note that you can use a cross-reference for your section number as well (Paragraph number of Heading). -- Suzanne S. Use the Insert Reference Cross-Reference command, and tell it to display
the page number. If you're referring to a heading (in a specific style such as Heading 1), choose Heading in the dropdown on the left, and choose the heading from the list. If there isn't a heading at the beginning of the section, insert a bookmark there, and in the cross-reference dialog choose Bookmark in the dropdown. After adjusting the margins, you may need to select all (Ctrl+A) and update the fields (F9) to get the new page numbers. -- Regards, Jay Freedman Microsoft Word MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit.
