What about page layout view... everything looks fine there I take it?

Some things can't be seen in Normal view. Maybe there's just some embedded
object in the doc that Normal view can't display. Or, if there's editable
text, maybe it's in a text box in the drawing layer?

I don't know a complete list of what doesn't show in Normal view. It should
help a lot if you display formatting characters (Ctrl+*) and field codes
(Alt+F9), if you haven't already.
