I have both Word 2003 and Word 2007 installed.
The default "Microsoft Office Word" is Word 2007.

I have Word 2003 still installed since MS removed insert from scanner from
Word 2007. I use that feature a lot so I still need Word 2003 available.

So how do I run Word 2003?

E.g. Right mouse on a Doc file.
Open with ...
It only shows Microsoft Office Word (which is Word 2007).
It does not show Word Office 2003.
So how do I make one of the items be Word 2003?
Just to be clear. I still want Word 2007 to be the default.
I just need to have Word 2003 available in Open with ...

versions together. As for the 'open with' issue. I don't think there is a
satisfactory way of resolving this as the two Word versions share some
registry entries. You can set a default application for the doc file
association but I would suggest that you simply open the documents from
within the required version of Word.

I don't know if this is possible, however there is another workaround:
Put a shortcut of word2007 exe file in the SendTo folder. Then you can use
it, like the Open with command (from the context menu).
The SendTo folder is in the following location:
Users\[your account name]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

The path of SendTo folder I've posted corresponds to a Vista environment.
In XP you'll find it under "Documents and settings\[your account name]\"

Also note that in both environments the Folder is Hidden.

It is possible to change the default extension that Word places on saved
documents.Possibly, you can then assign files with that extension to be
opened by a particular version. Note that, if you share files, this
technique might prove awkward for other sharers/users.

informs you about changing certain registry entries with respect to Word
2003 including setting the default extension for saved files.

I did this "back in the day": doc for Word for DOS and dow for Word for
Windows. However, I am not sure under what circumstances (registry settings,
&c) the assignment of the doc extension to a particular version would prove
to persist now. Perhaps it's worth a look-see.

Even with all that being said, as with Graham, my suggestion would be to
open the application and use the File menu to open the user document.

Personally, I'd do what "geosto" suggests -- to create shortcuts to for Word
in the Sent To folder. That's what I did back when I had around 4 versions
of Office installed and it worked very well. :-)

Yes, that method does have its attractions. And having options is good!
However, since each method has pluses and minuses, and because the original
poster indicated that files were usually opened by clicking on the user
document, I thought it useful to outline a method that catered to that
preference.
