Default Word 2002 format problem

Hope this is a suitable newsgroup.

Lately my Word 2002 has had a strange problem. Doesn't always occur.

Instead of the document formatted as I saved it, when I open some documents
later it is a sort of raw document. All the text is in unformatted lines on
the page and includes a long list of formating instructions at the end of
the document. I can find no menu option to correct this problem.

I suppose I will have to find a fresh version of Word compatible with XP
and my old Word documents. And likely have to pay for it. I doubt I'll be
able to find the original install disk.

TIA
