Suzanne is referring to what some call a 'blank line' between paragraphs.
It
is commonly created by pressing Enter twice at the end of a paragraph by
those who haven't yet learned the difference between _typing_ and _word
processing_ :-)

I misread this as meaning that you were in fact referring to Space After in
the sense in which CyberTaz and I were using it..

each new paragraph (except the first in a chapter) but I write letters
etc.

That's actually a very common default. The built-in Body Text style
is
defined as Normal + 6 pts Spacing After. There are advantages to
using
space
after for body text styles; space after AND before for heading
styles.
