Cross References of type "Heading" do not refresh correctly
Heading cross-refs do not take into account new text added at the beginning
or end of the heading when refreshed. Presumably this is because the new text is not inside the current bookmark and is just being ignored. Surely this is a design flaw? Or is there a way in which we can force Word to grab the entire title everytime there's a refresh, in the way that other applications like FrameMaker do. |

Cross References of type "Heading" do not refresh correctly
Hi ?B?U3RldmVQ?=,
Heading cross-refs do not take into account new text added at the beginning or end of the heading when refreshed. Presumably this is because the new text is not inside the current bookmark and is just being ignored. Surely this is a design flaw? It is quite likely that is the cause, although in my experience (in recent versions of Word, at least) this hasn't been a problem. (Quite the reverse, actually. If I go to the beginning of a heading, press Enter, and type a new paragraph, that paragraph shows up in the X-ref.) I know of no way you can force Word to change where the bookmark stands, other then resetting the bookmark manually. Thanks again Cindy. We use Word 2003 by the way. And you're right, the x-ref
does take into account new text at the beginning. But unfortunately not: - when new text is added after or over the last character. - or if the whole heading string is replaced with new text (this kills the bookmark and breaks the x-ref) All very eccentric behaviour in my humble view, and a real time waster because it means we have no choice but to eyeball check all x-refs. Agree? "Cindy M -WordMVP-" wrote: Hi ?B?U3RldmVQ?=, Heading cross-refs do not take into account new text added at the beginning or end of the heading when refreshed. Cross References of type "Heading" do not refresh correctly
This is default behavior. To avoid getting more text in the cross-reference
than intended, it is important not to press Enter at the beginning of bookmarked text (always press Enter at the end of the previous paragraph instead). Conversely, to ensure that text added at the end gets inside the bookmark, insert it before the final character. -- Suzanne S. Agree? Pretty much :-) It's become especially painful since these bookmarks are no longer visible in the document. Then one at least had a warning...
