Default Styles: Applying a style to one paragraph changes whole document

I am using Word 2007 for the first time as a formating tool.

I have created a style called 'Dissertation Body', based on 'Normal'.

I try to apply the Style to one paragraph but for some reason the whole
document changes to the same style. I cant figure out why this is happening.
I am good with the previous version of word but cant figure it out in this
version.

Can anybody help
