Default file/sendto/mailrecipient failure

I have a client with Windows XP SP2 and all patches up-to-date; also OFFICE
2000 Business edition with all service packs and patches up-to-date.
When trying to send a file by email from WORD or EXCEL using
file/sendto/mailrecipient command the system fails.
OFFICE has been uninstalled and re-installed but the fault persists.
Would appreciate hearing from others having similar problems or suggesting
solutions.
ERROR MESSAGES:

1. when trying to send to mail recipient from WORD or EXCEL the following
error
message appears:
"MS OUTLOOK has encountered an error -- either there is no default mail
client
or the current client cannot fulfill the messaging request".

2. After pressing OK a second message appears
when sending out of WORD the second message reads:
"log on failed you must log on to your MC EXCHANGE to access your address
book
Error code --- unspecified error"
when sending out of EXCEL the second message reads:
"General mail failure. Quit MS Excel, restart mail system"
Quitting EXCEL and OUTLOOK and trying again solves nothing.
