Default Margin Markers not displayed

I am teaching Word 2003 to a retirement community group. They have their own
computer lab. On two of the eight computers, the Margin Markers are not
visible. How can I make them visible? All the computers are in the Print
Layout View with the rulers showing.

The margin markers i am referring to are the images on the ruler. On the
left, at the margin, should be a compound marker with a rectangle, an upward
pointing triangle, and a downward pointing triangle. On the right margin
marker should be an upward pointing triangle. These are the images that do
not appear.

Have the markers been dragged off to the left and right of the ruler? Check
the Format | Paragraph to see if there is a minus indentation.

Since I will not be on site until Thursday, I tried it on my own
installation. I could not drag the markers all the way off to cause them to
disappear. Moreover, when I dragged them as far as they would go (which was
to zero left and right margins) the shaded areas on the ruler disappeared but
not the marker. The computers in the lab did show the shaded areas.

Try using the menu. Format | Paragraph and insert -20 cm in the indent area.
You will still see the dark blue area, but not the markers.

When I enter -20cm, I get a message box telling me the measurement must be
between 0" and 22"

Sorry, that should be -20 mm or if you work in inches -2 inch. Try different
minus measurements appropriate to whatever you are using.

Attempts to insert ANY negative measurement generates the message "the
measurement must be between 0 and ... ." In otherwords, a negative
measurement is not accepted.

When you get to the computers, check the measurements on the paragraph
indentations (Format | Paragraph | Indentation) I can enter minus
measurements here without any error messages. I can't enter minus
measurements in Page Setup.
