Autotext exclusive to a new template
I am trying to creat autotext that will only be used and stored in a new
template I create. I can and have added new auto text to a new template, however, it always appears in the global template as well. How can I get Word 2003 to only accept autotext for only the new template I create and not in the all active templates list??? Is this possible? If not the autotext stored in my active template list will become cluttered with mounds of autotext that will never be used in any other documents. I have been able to add autotext to the new template without it going into the normal template, however, everything I add also appears in the all active templates list. If I delete it from the all active templates list, it also removes it from the new template I added. -- KM1 |

Charles,
Thank you for the response, however, I could not find the answere to my question on these sites. I really need to know if it is even possible in Word 2003 to add Autotext to a Document Template I create and not have it show up in the list for all active templates. I am thinking that the all active template list keeps all the autotext add-ins and from there they can be or are applied to the template you want. This would mean that the list in all active templates could get quite large. Especially when you include form letters, addresses, common phrases & words, etc. So I would like to add autotext that will be only specific to the template "I" create and not have any of it in all active templates. (I do know that none of what I added so far shows up in the normal.dot template, so that is good). KM1 "Charles Kenyon" wrote: Answered in another newsgroup. It will show up in the list for all active templates when a document
attached to your template is open since that is then one of the active templates. When a document not attached to your template is open, it should not show up. This assumes that your template is an attached document template and not a global template. You simply have to be careful when you create the AutoText to put it in your template rather than in normal.dot. To do this you need to use the AutoText dialog rather than simply a keyboard shortcut. Once you change the lookin setting on this dialog it remains changed for your Word session (or at least as long as the template is "open"). Charles,
Thank you very much. Now that answers my question. So anytime I add an autotext to my own template it will always show in all active templates. If I were to open a blank document and then look in autotext it would not show my additions in all active templates becasue the template I put it in is not active (that is at least if I had originally added inot my template through the autotext dialog box and not the shortcut key). So then, is there any limit to the amount of autotext I can add or as to the length of each autotext. For example, I highlighted a whole page of text while having the template I created active and pulled up the auto text box dialog box. Then I switched from all active templates to the template I created and clicked on add. I was amazed that it took only the first few words of the selection and added it to the auto text list. Then when I highlighted it in the box the preview showed the whole page I had typaed. When I tried it out in my template, after typing in those few words auto text had selected the whole page popped into place. So, is there a limit to the length of an autotext I can put int. I know the line itself only allows for 255 characters but for what will be added to the document, is there a limit. Also, Is there a limit to the number of items autotext can support. Any further info would be grateful. There is (virtually) no limit to the length or character of an AutoText
entry. The name (as you have found) is limited, but the name doesn't have to be the first part of the text; it is better to assign your own name, one whose first four characters will be unique, so that you can type the first four characters, get an AutoComplete tip, and press Enter to insert the AutoText. -- Suzanne S.
