Default compare documents side by side

I am unable to find the "compare documents side by side" toolbar under
customize. Was this something that should have been installed originally?

Hi K2-

I think you may be confusing two different features.

'Compare Side by Side With...' is in the Window menu and simply allows you
to view one doc in a window next to a second doc in a second window. You must
have at least 2 docs open for the command to be active. (This is probably
what you are referring to.)

There is also a feature in the Tools menu named 'Compare and Merge
documents' which takes you into an explorer window to select a document to
comare to. In order to comare rather than merge you must put a check in the
'Legal Blackline' box. Familiarity with Track Changes is useful if you want
to take advantage of this one. You might want to do a little more research
before you use it.

Good Luck |:)

Hey Cyber Taz,
I'm interested in the first part - comparing two documents. I have two docs
open, but the command for side-by-side is not showing up. I've tried to find
it under Tools, Customize, but it is not on the list to choose from. What
does the command look like or do you have any suggestions?

I'm fairly sure this is a new command in Word 2003. What version are you
using?

I'm pretty sure Daiya is right about that feature not being available prior
to '03.

If using XP or earlier (and depending on which version of Windows) you may
still be able to open the 2 docs, choose the command that refers to 'Tile'
from the Window menu and then right-click your Windows Task Bar and choose
Tile Windows Vertically.

Sadly, K2, you have made the erroneous (albeit common) assumption that the
people who wrote the Word 2003 help files and the people who wrote the Word
2003 code were even on the same planet.
I also struggled with the fact that the explicit instructions in the help
file could not be performed in the actual product.
But then I took a deep breath and reminded myself that the help files are to
the actual code as the product's quality is to its market share... ;-)
