Default Saving word documents in word format as opposed to wordpad

I have Word 2003 and I had "Help for WordPerfect Users" checked in the
Options section. I unchecked that and it's still saving as WordPad. My
default save is set to "Word document (*.doc). Why is it saving as WordPad?

I don't see how the WordPerfect setting had anything to do with the problem,
and Word doesn't save in WordPad format... WordPad's default format is (Word)
RTF. What is giving you the impression that this is happening differently?

If you mean that double+clicking a Word file icon causes WordPad to launch,
right-click a Word file icon, choose Open With and select 'Choose from List'
at the bottom of the menu. Pic Word & be sure to put a check in the box for
'Always use the selected program...'

When I save a document, the Icon next to the title of the document is a
WordPad icon, and when I put my mouse over the icon, the dialog box says
"Saved As: WordPad Document." I have my settings as "Save As: Word
Document" so the icon should be a Word Document icon but it isn't.

Double-clicking doesn't cause WordPad to launch. When I save the document,
I click to save it as a Word Document (the default is set to that), but it
still saves as a WordPad document. Very confusing.
