Default TMP files that don't begin with a "~$"

Whenever I or anyone at my office opens a word 2007 document, there
are some strange files being created. I understand that MS Word will
always create a copy of the file you have opened and are working on
and that the filename ALWAYS starts with a ~$.

That is happening on our computers. What Word 2007 is also doing
however is creating a temp file each time changes are saved in a
document that is open. These files DO NOT go away when you exit word
or close the current document. Here is a sample listing of the
directory where the original opened document resides and has been
opened, modified, and saved four times after making changes. This is
how the directory looks with the file still open:

C:\Myfiles\

mytestfile.docx
~$testfile.docx
3F796272.TMP
4D8C5B50.TMP
CC126DDE.TMP
524FB59C.TMP

The other thing that I noticed is that this mysterious TMP files are
only created when using MS Word 2007 to save a document to a previous
version of word - 97-2003.

Can anyone tell me what is causing these files to be created and if
there is a way to DISABLE these files from being created?

Thanks!

You cannot stop the temporary files from being created, but apart from the
files beginning ~$, the temporary files should be created in the User Temp
folder and not in the working folder. Check with a Windows forum for your OS
version how to verify the user temp environment is correctly configured.
