Digital signature and inserted file access

I have inserted a .pdf file into a Word doc as an icon. The .pdf file opens
without problem until a digital signature is added to the document, then the
file does not do anything. When the icon is right-clicked the only option is
"copy" (which just copies the icon). I have used the options in the help
menu without success. The digital signature does not have any hidden data.
What is happening?
