Default MailMerge Field Formatting - Date and/or Text

Is this possible ... and if so , how?

Using an Excel database as the mailmerge source, I have a column of data typically holding date values. Occassionally, there are text values like "NA" and "NR".

It the mailmerge document. this column's corresponding field in most cases is to display the date in "d-MMM" format. But what happens when it encounters a "N*" value.

Here is the mailmerge field as I have been experimenting with:
{IF{MERGEFIELD GAdv_Date} = "NR" "NR" {MERGFIELD "GAdv_Date"} \@ "D-MMM"}

It is displaying today's date.
