Default Outline problem in word 2007

I have an outline in word 2007. It goes from item 27 to item 48. I
need to know how to delete the extra 21 items?

thanks

Well, if "item 27 to item 48" are sequentially numbered, then the
outline consists of 22 items, so which 21 items do you consider
to be "extra"?

The items between 27 and 48 are missing.

I can't delete anything to keep the numbers in order.

Have you checked to make sure that all items are part of the same list? If
so, does selecting item 48 and pressing Ctrl+Q help? If so, repeat for the
remainder. Or it may suffice to right-click in item 48 and choose Continue
from Previous List.
